Remembering Geo T. Johnson

George T. Johnson was assigned to District Council 20 as an administrator in the winter of 1999.  He was later unanimously elected as Executive Director in April of 2002.  Mr. Johnson was the first AFSCME International employee to serve a dual role.  Geo, as he was affectionally called, was devoted to improving worker’s rights and conditions for District of Columbia employees.  As a young man raised in Barry Farms Housing Projects in Southeast Washington, DC, he hoped that he could give the city as much as it had given him.  George started out in Local 1, now referred to as Local 2091.  His career in labor began in the Department of Public Works agency but took him all over the United States after he gained employment at AFSCME International under the direction of the late Jerry Wurf.  His return to DC brought him great pride and he took his role seriously and served it fearlessly.  When George spoke, people listened!  Mr. Johnson retired in April 2014 having served the longest consecutive term in District Council 20 history.  We, the Council 20 family, are saddened by the passing of Brother Geo, however, his memory will live here forever.
