Council 20 Aids Student
Achievers in a DC School
Though seldom spotlighted by the media, Council 20 AFSCME has backed up its commitment to nurture high achievers in D.C. public schools.
The latest evidence came in September, when Council 20 collaborated with Destiny-Pride, Inc., to acknowledge a big academic achievement of 40 students from Martin Luther King Elementary School in southeast D.C.
They were recognized for successfully passing a very difficult standardized math and reading test given to D.C. students. Each child was given a $25 gift card from Target Department Store.
Council 20 Executive Director Geo T. Johnson said, “We want these high achievers to know the community supports their dreams and appreciates their hard work in the classroom. We also applaud their parents who set high standards and their teachers who challenge them to excel every day.”
Council 20 Partnerships Work
Council 20 has been a generous education partner, assisting Destiny-Pride, Inc., the D.C. Department of Human Services, the community and public schools in bringing quality education and stability to District of Columbia students.
“This kind of private/public partnership is about working together to have a meaningful impact on children who are pursuing the right path,” Johnson said. “But it is also about what’s possible to achieve in other areas through active partnerships.”
Johnson, who grew up in Barry Farms, also received a plaque for his decades of support for youth and public education in the District.
